Mexicali (1990 pop., 602,390) is the capital of Baja California state in northwestern Mexico. It is located in the Mexicali Valley, an extension of the Imperial Valley, directly south of the U.S. border from the city of Calexico, Calif. Mexicali is an important transportation and commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region, and many foreign companies have set up factories there. Mexicali has experienced rapid population growth since the 1930s when irrigation and transportation systems were improved and land reform took place in the surrounding region. The University of Baja California (1957) is there.
